Things I Never Saw Coming

The Cellphone

I never saw that everyone would be accessible 24-7. I went into early labor with one of our boys, and I had to call my husband’s office, which sent a human to where he was working off site, with a note that said I was in the hospital. That’s how we did it back in the day.

The Internet

I thought the internet would be like the Yellow Pages. I never saw it as the primary way we communicate, shop, conduct business, vote, live, love and date each other. Now some of you haven’t even heard of the Yellow Pages.

Tall Mattresses

Years ago, a mattress was about eight inches tall. Today they get up to 22”. Our bed frame, which we purchased 25 years ago, is made to fit around a nine inch mattress. The lowest mattress I can find is 12”, which is three inches too tall for my frame. Boo.

The End of Fur

Back in the day, a great big fluffy fur was the ultimate status symbol. Today, all the fur stores are going out of business. I don’t want to wear a dead animal, in fact, most of my handbags are majority fabric. But it’s surprising, and somewhat heartwarming, that no one else wants to wear a dead animal either.

The Dairy Demise

Growing up, every single person drank milk. One of our sons was born with a milk allergy. Mike and I worried that he would not get the necessary nutrients to live a normal life. Can you believe it? Borden recently filed for bankruptcy. Honestly, I never saw the day when people would stop drinking milk. By the way, our son is doing just fine.

Anusara Yoga Annihilation

I invested quite a bit of money and time into my yoga education with Anusara, and overnight it was blown apart by the actions of its founder. I never saw that coming. Actually, Anusara still flounders on, but mostly in Europe and in other isolated communities that don’t have good internet. J.K.

Michelle Marchildon is the Yogi Muse. She is the author of four books on yoga and life. If you can’t find her books or writings, you might try using your cellphone or the internet. Just saying.
